Weird-Matri-Nomics (2026) is an 18-minute multi-channel video installation by Claire Lawrie, developed in collaboration with artist Clémence Hémard-Hermitant during the final weeks of Clémence’s pregnancy. Drawing on Lawrie’s experience as a birth doula, the film critiques the defamiliarizing protocols of contemporary clinical obstetrics while celebrating the creative, radical potential of maternal subjectivity. By juxtaposing modern maternal anxieties with an ancient Anglo-Saxon birth charm from the British Library, the film evokes a holistic medieval imaginary, framing pregnancy not merely as a biological event, but as a liminal state of becoming (Wyrd) where individual boundaries dissolve and shared ancestral voices echo.
